How to use the Zinc Millennium Map
- Select the region where your project is located from the drop down list or click an area on the map. An enlarged image of the region selected will appear.
- Select the town or city from the drop down list or use the search facility to find the exact location. If the place name does not appear please input the nearest /next town or place name available.
- A 40km grid divided into 10km squares will appear on your screen. If you hover over the selected area the average background zinc corrosion rate in µm/year will be displayed.
- The key will give an approximate life for an 85µm galvanized coating in years.
- Check, either by contacting Galvanizers Association or by referring to our literature, the coating thickness that you are likely to achieve on your steelwork.
- For corrosion rates in neighbouring 10km squares simply hover over each one and a background corrosion value will appear.
- Using the directional arrows you can also scroll North, South, East and West to discover the corrosion rates for neighbouring 40km grids.
This is an approximate guide and is most relevant to stationary, exterior-exposed structures. You will need to take account of any site specific factors which may affect the corrosion rate. Detailed data for individual sites and advice on its interpretation (e.g. the possible effects of local micro-climate on the corrosion rate actually experienced by the galvanized structure) is available from Galvanizers Association.
