2018 Highly Commended Architecture

Blue Mountain School by 6a architects was highly commended for its use of galvanized steel as a decorative finish throughout the building.

“Uses galvanized steel in a decorative way, drawing out the complex shimmering qualities of the material, make it stand out in its own right.”
Isabelle Priest, Galvanizing Awards Judge

In the tradition of house museums, the building is a puzzle of rooms and uses, playing host to a fashion archive, exhibition spaces, a kitchen and wine room, a perfumery, listening spaces and various room sets by international designers.

6a architects led a three-year collaboration with Hostem to transform the six-storey building. Exceptional detail was paid to the accentuation of the texture of the galvanized coating and treatment of specific areas to highlight the manufacturing process.

“Galvanized steel screens make you want to get up close and touch them.”
Isabelle Priest, Riba Journal
