Kays Medical is a long-established market leader in the provision of medical supplies/training. However, its Georgian premises, on the outskirts of Liverpool City Centre were hindering growth, presenting considerable logistical challenges – with limited visitor parking and inadequate warehousing across several sites.
A brownfield plot, on a prime corner location in Speke, with excellent transport links, and parking potential, provided the ideal alternative site. Denovo Design were engaged by the client – to design a contemporary new-build solution.
The brief was for a statement building, with modern, more flexible/functional premises. The plot would accommodate 50,000 sq ft of bespoke, office accommodation with adjoining warehouse, all on one site. To support the company’s commercial development two occupational health suites were required, along with a pharmacy store and cold storage facilities.
The building needed to be environmentally efficient, minimising energy/water bills & saving on resources.
Staff health and wellbeing were integral to the design, which needed to reflect the company’s corporate ethos, and its commitment to providing a range of occupational health services to local businesses/communities. It needed to be an ‘inspirational place to work’, light and bright, with clean lines reflecting the services provided. Access to outdoor space was also important.
The plant room steel frame was galvanised to protect the building structure in an exposed coastal environment. Other galvanized elements included; external balcony steel frame, lamp standards and security barrier, metal supports for brise soleil, bicycle rack and smoker’s shelter.
