The mighty arch of the Jembatan Rumpiang Bridge, which spans the Barito River at the South-Eastern tip of Borneo, gives the impression of a light, filigree structure. The bridge makes it easier to access the city of Marabahan, which previously could only be reached by ferry.
The bridge’s arch, which forms the framework structure, has a span of 200 m with the total length of the Barito River crossing being 750 m. All of the steel elements of the bridge (1,100 tonnes) were hot dip galvanized and bolted together. This helped with the transportation of the steel sections to site and during the construction phase of the project.
The use of hot dip galvanizing provides the bridge with long-term protection against corrosion suitable for the tropical climate of Borneo. The island, which is in the Malaysian archipelago, has a high average mean temperature of 27°C with an atmospheric humidity of more than 80 percent and the annual precipitation can be as high as 4,000 millimetres.
