A typical concrete residential block or inspirational design? On first glance the answer could easily be the former, for a new residential complex built in Winterthur, Switzerland. Its vertical façade consists of galvanized steel, glass and raw concrete built on a plot of just 400 m2.
Despite the restricted site, wild bär heule Architekten have attempted to create spacious living areas with an unconventional 70 m2 footprint by placing supporting galvanized columns externally and organizing internal access by circulation from room to room along the façade around a central services block.
Dominant features of the design include a story height glazing grid (supported by galvanized steel and glass) and a sculptural concrete staircase tower. The concrete is finished either by: cladding with galvanized steel to stair case areas, shuttered formwork to walls and soffits, and in the bathrooms where it is ground smooth to expose the gravel. Galvanized steel and raw concrete combine to form a chic industrial aesthetic.
