Schille Solar House, Germany

Almost 30 years ago, the owner of a modernist house in the Spessart mountains wished for a conservatory addition to compliment the existing structure. The solution developed into the creation of a ´house within a house‘. The construction of the hot dip galvanized frame mimicked that of a greenhouse. A recent inspection of the galvanized structure carried out by Institut Feuerverzinken, found coating thicknesses of between 60 and 120 micrometres remain on the steel. This would indicate that the coating will provide at least another 50-80 years of protection. The client is still very pleased with the original concept of the living space and the savings on energy bills. “It has been a maintenance-free building apart from looking after the render.”
