Issue#02—2018

Longevity, beautiful design and a deep running concern for sustainability were the dominant themes of the 2018 GAGAs. We will be featuring the winners in the next two issues of HDG magazine.

A quick roll call of the winners: Old Shed New House in the Architecture category by Tonkin Liu; Middleton of Rora by Shand Building Design won the Engineering category; the Sustainability award went to Millar + Howard Workshop for Dursley Treehouse; Newground Architects won best use of Duplex for Rehearsal Rooms in North Acton; the Detail award went to Michael Trentham Architects for The New Portland Arms and the Construction Industry Choice Award, a new award given this year, voted for by construction professionals was awarded to Pezo von Ellrichshausen for A Hall for Hull.

The high standard of entries in the architecture category meant that judges chose to highly commend Blue Mountain School by 6a architects.

Hardelot Theatre by Studio Andrew Todd gained a special mention as France’s first permanent neo-Shakespearean theatre, and the first naturally-ventilated complex arts building in the world. Artist Emma Stothard’s sculpture Boiled Lobster received a special mention for its use of a duplex coating.

The integrity of vision and commitment to the lifespan of projects and their role within the wider landscape, went to the heart of many of this year’s entries.
